Our Dentists

Dr. Paul Downing grew up in Fort Mill, South Carolina, graduated from Indiana University with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry in 1982, and earned his Doctorate of Dental Medicine at MUSC in Charleston, South Carolina. After a one-year General Practice Residency at the VA Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee, he returned to South Carolina in 1988 to establish his practice.

In 2009, Dr. Downing earned certification in the use of the LANAP laser system, which is revolutionizing treatment of gum disease. No more cutting and painful sewing of gums. The laser treats disease with minimal discomfort and virtually no downtime. It is regenerative, not resective.

In 2011, Dr. Downing completed the Medical College of Georgia Maxi-Implant course and has been placing implants since then. He promptly joined the American Academy of Implant Dentistry and is honored to be an Associate Fellow.

Dr. Downing has the prestigious honor of being a Fellow of the Academy Of General Dentistry and is a member of the American Dental Association, South Carolina Dental Association, and the Palmetto Study Club.

Dr. Egerton Maitland brings a vast knowledge of clinical procedures to White Knoll Comprehensive Dentistry. He is experienced in all aspects of General Dentistry with an emphasis on oral surgery, third molar extractions, endodontics, cosmetic dentistry, and implant placement. He is certified in Oral Conscious Sedation, Botox and Dermal Fillers.

Dr. Matiland received his DDS in Dentistry from SUNY at Buffalo School of Dentistry. He is a fellow, Academy of General Dentistry, Member, Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation, Member American Association of Facial Aesthetica and Member, American Academy of Implant Dentistry.

When not providing patients with the highest level of oral care, Dr. Maitland enjoys times as a private pilot, hunter, skier as well as his passion for men’s baseball.
